Regional Science Olympiad at NorthEastern Illinois University.
Each year, middle and high schools send teams of students to compete in a variety of science challenges. Some involve entering machines created beforehand, others must be built on site, many are purely academic activities, all have strictly defined limits and objectives. The battery buggy must be exactly 60cm long and under 30cm wide, have no solid state components, and stop at a programmable number of meters. Judging is on straightness, distance accuracy and time prediction. The "Rube Goldberg"-like Mission Possible machines must launch three ping-pong balls in one minute, with points for time accuracy, and number and types of energy transfers.
