Smells Like 'Ween Spirit
Smells Like 'Ween Spirit
The usual mix of traditional and tangential. We Chicagoans are pretty good at this nasty holiday, better than Iowans at least. This week the City holds Chicagoween, Haunted Elevated Train Rides, Trails of Terror, a Wicker Park tour, and opens the Pumpkin Plaza and Haunted Village. Big bizness brings Fright Fest and Scream Fest (no relation). MSI's Science Of Fear reaches new frights and I'll be attending the MCA Pumped-Up Pumpkins workshop. TOON plays a new Space Ghost episode and a Scooby Doo mystery marathon. Psychotronic plays a Vincent Price vampire movie and Brew&View has Blair Witch. COM shows a new South Park Halloween special and local thespians perform Anthony and Cleopatra, Terror Through Time, Scary Home Companion and Whispering City. The ghost of Gene Roddenberry joins the full moon Sunday, after the Graceland Cemetery Tour, and the Borg visit on Wednesday. Chicago International Children's Film Festival, the Spirit Native American dance extravaganza and Yellow Submarine and Zardoz midnite shows end. The Farmers Markets are also ending and Crobar has it's LAST LUNACY!!!!! The Joffrey performs, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude speak, Beat Streuli opens at the MCA and the much awaited Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum opens (free for now). A dense music weekend includes Kid Rock, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mr. Blotto, Rush and Madonna tributes, Widespread Panic, Funky Meters, Blackmore's Night, Return to Paradise, Zap Mama, Garbage, Lit, Faust, Frontier, DJ Shadow, Latyrx, Andrea Parker and Megadeth. Later in the week there's Mr. Bungle, ABC, 311, Iggy Pop and new stuff from CSNY and Bush. The nation takes note of the Chicago Marathon this weekend, but overlooks the Backwards One Mile later in the week. Celebrate your choice of Mother-in-law Day (scary), Start of Scorpio (a dark sided sign) or United Nations Day. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Elizabeth Dole speak on business success for witches, Reader Matches holds the creatively named Cirque Du Soul Mate and spookiest of all, Quentin Crisp entertains for the Leather Museum. Aaahhhhhhhh!
