Chicago anti-war march and rally.
Observing one year since Bush's invasion of Iraq. Editor's notes: Though I honor this effort, and agree that our "elected" administration's actions have been unprecedented, and unsupportable in fact, urgency, and history (shame on you congress), this particular event could have been better. It was rather poorly organized (no published route, official informational handouts, route signage, management, or press liaison in evidence, and I saw no web-site or posters beforehand), highly factioned (interests including U.S. out of Iraq, U.S. out of Haiti, impeach Bush, Free Palestine, Anarchists, and others vying for attention), and frankly, relatively low turnout. Furthermore, the speakers (with the exception of Jesse Jackson) were weak (one nearly advocated violent revolt), and sound system brittle. Though I heard claims that 5000 were present, in my fairly competent people counting experience, I would guess there were about 800 actually involved in marching (the entire mass was just over a block long), and maybe 400 or more who were present only at one end or the other, and many more who simply happened to be downtown for other reasons. Police radio chattered with similar figures. In fairness, the event is inherently stymied in planning and execution by federal and local forces. I would guess there were in excess of 1200 police officers altogether; literally phalanx upon phalanx in full storm-trooper gear. Contact me if you've got photos to add here.
