F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition Regionals at NorthWestern University.
Dozens of corporate sponsored College and High School engineering teams compete in a sport-like contest, changed each year, with only six weeks to prepare. Multiple challenges include autonomous operation and homing phase, step climbing, ball grappling, and bonus points for finishing suspended off the ground. Presented since 1992 by F.I.R.S.T. ("For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology"), a non-profit organization. This seeding ground for future engineers changes the lives of everyone it touches, and engenders massive family and peer support and enthusiasm. Over 50 teams compete for two days in this region alone, leading to finals in Atlanta. Editor's single favorite event of the year (this was my fourth), better than pro baseball and football put together.
